Amjad Khan was born on 12 Sep 1940 in Peshawar, Pakistan. He was an Indian Film Actor & Film Director who worked in Bollywood, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada films.
Amjad khan is the son of Jayant and his younger brother Imtiaz Khan is the actor. From St.Andrew’s High School in Bandra Bombay, he completed his schooling education. From the R.D. National College Amjad has completed their further studies and he became the General Secretary due to the highest elected student body representative. He worked as a theater artist and performed in his college with his brother during his college and school days.
Before becoming a Film actor Amjad khan was a theatre actor. In 1951 he worked as a child artist in the film Nazneen. When he worked in this film his age was just 11 years old. After then he worked in the movie Ab Dilli Dur Nahin in 1957 at the age of 17 years. In the film Love and God in the 1960s he had a brief appearance and he assisted K. Asif. Amjad appeared in the film named Hindustan ki Kasam in a small role in 1973. For the film Sholay he got the opportunity to play the role of dacoit Gabbar Singh in 1975. A book on Chambal dacoits written by Taroon Kumar Bhaduri (actress Jaya Bhaduri’s father) was also read by Amjad for the preparation of the role.
With this film, Amjad got popularity and fame. His dialogues become an integral part of Bollywood. In spite of these, Amjad also works in the advertisements. He appeared in the ad of Britannia Glucose Biscuits in the character of Gabbar Singh. He was popularly known as Gabbar Ki Asli Pasand. This was the first time a villain was being used to sell a popular product. Although Khan played various negative roles in different films like Des Pardesh, Nastik, Satte Pe Satta, Chambal Ki Kasam, and many more during the 1970s to 1980s.
For the film, Meera Amjad was portrayed as Emperor Akbar in 1979. In spite of the Negative roles, he was also playing many positive roles in various films like Yaarana and Laawaris in 1981. In the English language film The Perfect Murder as an Underworld Don, he appeared in 1988. In 1991 the role of Gabbar Singh was reprised in the film Ramgarh Ke Sholay. He also directed films in the 1980s. The film Ameer Aadmi Gareeb Aadmi directed by Amjad did not do well but his next film become a blockbuster at the box office.
In 1976 Amjad won the award BFJA Awards under the category Best Supporting Actor and in 1980 he won the Filmfare Awards under the category Best Supporting Actor for the film Dada and Yaarana. After this, he won the next Filmfare Award under the category Best Performance in a Comic Role for the film Maa Kasam.

Amjad Khan died on 27 july, 1992 at age of 52 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He died in road accident on the Mumbai-Goa highway while going to set of shooting of film The Great Gambler in which Amitabh Bachchan was acting with him. He was injured very seriously and went to coma. During the operation his health was serious due to increase in weight and then he died due to heart failure.
